PARKLETS Bringing The Community Together

This summer we worked with BUMP in Calgary to bring two beautiful parklets to the downtown Calgary area. These are public spaces in front of many different shops that allow the community to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere.

BUMP featured three artists:

JD is a self-taught artist living in Calgary. JD explains his piece as “Bringing multiple design elements that consist completely of aerosol-based paints in a street art/graffiti influenced style my practice is rooted in”. He views the Beltline as one of the city’s most vibrant gathering places and used bright high impact tones to reflect the atmosphere of 17th ave Calgary.

Sydonne Warren  & Jess Broz created ‘Flowers in the Wind’ which is dedicated to the women that are spreading positivity, equality, and diversity. We honour nurturers of the past who worked hard to shape the future, and we celebrate those who are nurturing the future in a time of a global crisis”. This parklet is currently living in Kensington.

Field House Brewery

Abbotsford, BC

Case Study #3

Deployed in early spring 2021, this sleek matte black parklet defines the new patio space for Field House Brewery in Abbotsford.

With the restrictions put in place for the safety of all in the continued presence of COVID-19; the need for businesses to have solid and functional patio space is ever-expanding. Field House Brewery needed a comfortable outdoor dining space and wanted something that looks good and defines the space as more than a temporary solution to the reality of current public interactions.

Our Forty Foot Parklet was the ultimate solution - easily deployed and integrated; robust and long-lasting; providing covered seating for many customers; installed in a few hours and ready to be enjoyed without delay.

With no need to shut down and have a construction site to further slow business, our pre-fab Parklets create places for businesses to thrive!

Case Study #4

OPEN STREETS ACTION PLAN - Summer 2020

In February 2020, we began exploring the idea of new containerized environments with The City of North Vancouver. With COVID-19 thousands of local businesses everywhere reeling from the impacts.

In May 2020, partnering with the City of North Vancouver we realized we could have a significant positive benefit by installing a Box Parklet on Lonsdale & 17th near 20+ local Food & Beverage businesses. This Box Parklet was designed to be a flexible and multifunctional space, potentially able to move locations and find new uses as time progressed and the City’s needs change. Its primary intention is to assist local businesses with guest seating during the physical distancing protocols.

To construct this unit we used an up-cycled shipping container that was derelict and purchased from the City of Vancouver, through a refurbishing & design process we were able to take a humble discarded container into a lovely public space for all to enjoy!

Case Study #5

STREETERY - season Seating for Popina Canteen

Popina Canteen opened in 2018 on Granville Island and to create an iconic outdoor experience, 5 Chefs utilized our sister companies (Hawkers) modular kitchens to create an outdoor dining experience.

While the weather in Vancouver is temperate most of the year, there was one challenge around a dining space. Popina needed to find a solution for guests to sit in that could serve as a functional all-season dining space without constructing a building attached to the modular kitchens.

Box Parklets were used to create a semi-attached dining space “structure” where guests can sit and enjoy their food as an expansion of the walk-up ordering system.
